Dr. Peter Tong
Dr. Peter Tong has been one of the greatest supporters and visionaries at Phoenix Squadron. Dr. Tong has a Ph.D. from RMIT in Aerospace Engineering. He strives to help students pursue their own passion projects and research in the field. Dr. Tong specializes in merging Big Data Analytics with Aerial Technology, and his expertise has enabled students to utilize advanced data science techniques for drone applications. Whether guiding a complex research endeavor or mentoring young engineers, Dr. Tong is dedicated to advancing innovation in unmanned systems. His technical knowledge and enthusiasm for teaching make him an invaluable member of the Phoenix Squadron team. We are thankful for Dr. Tong's vision and leadership - with him, skies aren't the limit!
Shreyas Sharma Co-Founder
Shreyas Sharma, Co-Founder of Phoenix Squadron is always looking for the next big project and always seeking opportunities. Shreyas specializes in Autonomous Navigation systems, with his most notable project being Prokyon, a fully autonomous industrial inspection drone. Shreyas is a CAAC & DGCA certified Pilot. Shreyas is also the lead specialist in design fabrication & autonomous algorithm development - with Laser Cutting & 3D Printing. Shreyas is fluent in Python, Java, and C++. When not seen flying drones, Shreyas is an Autonomous Ground Vehicle enthusiast and loves mentoring new students with like-minded interests. Shreyas is a co-recipient of the 2023 ACAMIS research grant, SISSEF 2023 Grand Winner, and Author of the Evolving Landscape of Drones.
Marcus Chu Co-Founder
Committed to excellence and innovation, Marcus Chu is an individual with a drive and passion for robotics and aerospace. Marcus is the technical and production lead for Phoenix Squadron's many projects, most notably leading Phoenix Squadron's drone swarm initiative HIVE and leveraging his experience in sensor programming and algorithm optimization to design PFL curriculum and lead members in drone R&D projects such as autonomous drone delivery. Marcus also specializes and finds passion in FPV drone cinematography and fixed-wing model aviation. He is both an FAA and CAAC-certified drone pilot. When he is not working on the next Phoenix Squadron project or production, he can be found working on Vex competition robots, flying full-scale aircraft, or simply experimenting with the latest up and coming technologies. Marcus has worked on the China Central Television 2023 Spring Gala drone swarm team, is a co-recipient of the 2023 ACAMIS research grant, and is a SISSEF 2023 Winner.
Jinkyu Jang Vice President
Focused on innovation and development, Simon has played a pivotal role in Phoenix Squadron since his early days as a member in 8th grade ( 2021). Through continuous participation in the club, he has contributed as a builder, researcher, and project manager, improving the club in ways that ensure its success in teaching others and the students themselves. He can be seen providing constructive feedback to newcomers to the club and aiding in their designs. Simon is also passionate about fixed-wing aircraft and is currently working on his first VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) prototype. His most notable projects in the club are the drone delivery project and specializing in managing the DGCS (Damoda Ground Control Station) Drone system for the Phoenix Hive show.
Caleb Hsu Chief Officer
Fueled by a future-oriented vision, Caleb brings a dynamic and forward-thinking presence to the executive team. Proficient in Autodesk Maya, Caleb oversees Phoenix Squadron's HIVE division while spearheading its development and design department. Caleb manages the strategic logistics for events while also supervising safety and security. Caleb can often be found in the Makerspace, constructing robot drivetrains or experimenting with various gear ratios, and he hopes to integrate his experience with robotics to design mission-specialized modular payloads for standard Hexacopters. Through innovative technical solutions and enthusiastic mentorship, Caleb strives to propel Phoenix Squadron to new heights.
Gyumin Kim Officer
Gyumin(Michael), a core Phoenix Squadron member since his freshman year, is always ready to tackle problems and come up with innovative approaches to solve them. Michael specializes in circuit board designing using Arduino and Raspberry Pi and devising algorithms to carry out assigned tasks. He took a pivotal role in the PhoenixHive as the show choreographer to create a dynamic, coordinated movement of drones for each scene. Also, Michael aims to continue the Phoenix Squadron's Legacy by passing his experience and learnings to the underclassmen. He supervises middle school engineers in designing their own drones and gives feedback on their builds. Adapting his specialization, Michael is working on Wi-Fi-enabled dual-drone system for rescue mission in industrial accident.
